Licensed Practical Nurses

What exactly does a licensed practical nurse do? They have duties that are aimed to help physicians and registered nurses with carrying their tasks. Their responsibilities vary depending on their work setting. Licensed Practical nurses are directly under the supervision of Registered Nurses and can perform skilled rehabilitative, palliative or preventative nursing care.

Duties may include but is not limited to:

  • Administering medication
  • Calculating and adjusting IV flow rates
  • Hang I.V.’s premixed with medication
  • Change dressings
  • Inspect I.V. insertion sites
  • Take blood pressure
  • Insert catheters
  • Change bandage/dressings
